National Junior Championships
LSUS Weightlifters picked up three gold and one silver medal at the National Junior Championships in Houston, TX this past weekend. Breanne Bassler (Houston, TX) won the 58 kg category with lifts of 75 kg in the snatch and 95 kg in the clean and jerk. Jared Fleming (Elmira, NY) and Thomas Braddy (Macclenny, FL) both won their respective weight categories. Fleming lifted 140 kg in the snatch and and 177 kg in the clean and jerk in the 94 kg category. He also received the Best Lifter Award in the Men's category for lifting the most weight relative to body weight. Braddy snatched 128 kg and clean and jerked 181 kg in the 105 kg category. Micheal Asbate (Altamonte Springs, FL) finished second in the 77 kg category with lifts of 113 in the snatch and 141 in the clean and jerk. Bassler, Fleming, and Braddy will all be members of the USA National Junior Team that will compete in the Junior World Championships June 30 through July 7 in Penang, Malaysia.
Weightlifter Authors Chapter in Abraham Lincoln Book
LSUS Weightlifter Chris Kim has written the chapter "Abraham Lincoln in Contempory Korea" for the book Abraham Lincoln Without Borders: Lincoln's Legacy Outside the United States. Chris started lifting at LSUS in 2001 and has competed in numerous national competitions. He will be leaving LSUS next fall to attend UCLA's Master of Public Health Program.
Christine Girard and Marilou Dozois Prévost, weightlifters on Canada’s 2008 Olympic Team, once again had a successful training camp at LSUS. Both were gold medalist in their weight categories at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India. Girard, who finished fourth at the Olympic Games, has won medals in three Commonwealth Games and competed in five World Championships, three Junior World Championships, and the Pan American Games. Dozois Prévost was the silver medalist at the 2010 World University Championships and has competed in four World Championships and two Junior World Championships.
They were accompanied by their coach, Pierre Bergeron, who was Canada’s Olympic Coach in 2000 and 2004. He has also been Canada’s coach at eleven World Championships, four Commonwealth Games and, two Pan American Games.
This was Bergeron’s seventh visit to Shreveport since 1996 when he was a coach at the North America, Central America, and Caribbean Islands Championships hosted at LSUS. He has returned for competitions and training camps with weightlifters from Québec. Girard and Dozois Prévost first visited Shreveport for a competition in 2000. This was Girard’s fifth visit and Dozois Prévost’s third. Quebec weightlifters have held training camps at LSUS in 2002, 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
Nine LSUS lifters, including Olympian Kendrick Farris, have competed in numerous junior competitions in Québec. LSUS weightlifters and Canadian weightlifters who have trained at LSUS were in three of the same international events in 2010, the Pan American Championships in Guatemala City, Guatemala; the World University Championships in Taichung City, Taiwan; and the World Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Bergeron was the coach for Canada in the World University and World Championships while LSUS’s Kyle Pierce was a coach for the USA Teams.
American Open
USA Weightlifting Center for High Performance and Development at LSUS weightlifters won four of the fifteen categories at the 2010 American Open in Cincinnati, Ohio. Four other LSUS lifters came home with silver medals. Hilary Katzenmeier (Abilene, TX), competing for the first time in the 53 kg category, grabbed the gold medal with lifts of 76 kg in the snatch and 97 kg in the clean and jerk. Erin Wallace (Bossier City, LA) won her third straight national event, making 100 kg in the snatch and 116 kg in the clean and jerk. Sean Hutchinson (Palatka, FL) was the gold medalist in the 62 kg category with lifts of 115 kg in the snatch and 135 in the clean and jerk. Jared Fleming (Elmira, NY), 19 years old, won the 94 kg category making a 150 kg snatch and a 190 kg clean and jerk. Silver medalists included Suzanna Sanchez (Alvin, TX) in the 48 kg category, Samantha Turnbull (Daytona Beach, FL) in the 58 kg category, Whitnee Maycock (Lexington, MO) in the 75 kg category, and Zach Schluender (Gladstone, MO) in the super heavyweight category.
