Leadership Curriculum

Leadership 201
LDSH 201 - Introduction to Leadership- This class is an in-depth introduction to character-based leadership practices and "Leaders of Character."  The book, "The 25 Elements of Leaders of Character" is the guide for the class and will be comprehensively examined.  First we define leadership and differentiate it from management, commandership, principalship, and pastorship.  Then, each one of the "25 Elements of Leaders of Character" will be examined in detail.  Since self-development is the first and most important step in becoming a leader, students will get to know themselves better throughout the class through self-assessment exercises and short inner focused papers on topics such as values, honor, and integrity. To better understand how it all comes together we also look at the topic of power because leadership and power are inextricably correlated.  To develop an even broader view of leadership, students will also read John C. Maxwell's 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.

Leadership 202
LDSH 202 - Survey of Popular Leadership Books- This class offers an introduction to numerous works and thoughts on leadership from a diverse array of authors, writers, and real-world practitioners.  Students get a detailed summary of numerous popular leadership books while also preparing and presenting an extensive presentation on a leadership book of their own choosing.  The number of leadership books available today is staggering, and every book contains valuable information for any leader.  It would be a labor of perhaps years to go through each one to mine the most valuable nuggets.  Leadership 202 is about mining those nuggets.  Each student will read a leadership book, write a summary of the book, and prepare and deliver a presentation on the book to the class.

Leadership 301
LDSH 301 - Leadership Skills Development I- This course offers participants the opportunity to develop practical leadership skills by actually practicing leading through various extensive experiential learning activities.  Learning will come significantly from doing.  The class will complete numerous projects throughout the semester intended to offer students the opportunity to step up and lead while completing worthwhile tasks and events.  Mentor/mentee projects will be big part of the class along with at least one major class project or event.

LDSH 302 - Leadership Skills Development II- This course offers participants the opportunity to develop practical leadership skills by actually practicing leading through various extensive experiential learning activities.  Learning will come significantly from doing.  The class will complete numerous projects throughout the semester intended to offer students the opportunity to step up and lead while completing worthwhile tasks and events.  Mentor/mentee projects will be big part of the class along with at least one major class project or event.

Leadership 401
LDSH 401 - Leadership Mentorship and Practice- This course offers select students with extensive experience in the LEAD program advanced character and leadership development opportunities through hands on practice and extensive participation in administering the LEAD program.  Class projects may include: leading structured mentoring projects involving upperclassmen mentoring underclassmen mentees; assisting an instructor with a leadership class; developing, coordinating and leading class community service projects;  or developing, coordinating, and leading various LEAD or LEAD Corps projects (i.e. LEAD Summit, the Mr. & Ms. Chesapeake Energy LSUS LEAD Competition, the Chick-fil-A Leadercast, etc.); and other assigned leadership roles. 

Leadership 402
LDSH 402 - Leadership Seminar - This course offers students an opportunity to learn about and develop various aspects of being a leader.  Topics covered in the class include: professionalism (dress, etiquette, communications, manners, protocol, etc.), personal branding, charisma, networking (small talk, social interactions, etc.), team-building, mentoring, public speaking, and other skills or attributes that are important to leaders.

Leadership 405
LDSH 405 - Leadership Ethics - Right or Wrong, Good or Bad?  What constitutes right and wrong isn't just a matter of opinion- survival of human society depends on ethical and moral behavior.  Answer the question: "What if everyone did it?" Lie, cheat, steal, murder, etc., etc.  This class is meant to be an unbiased exploratory overview of ethics, various ethical theories, and how it all relates to us as leaders and civilized citizens of the community.  Emphasis will be placed on how we can utilize this information to make us better leaders.
