Electronic Media Journalism
In our media-rich culture, learning how to produce and manage news in a variety of electronic formats is critical for anyone wishing to enter the field of broadcasting. Newscasters, editors, and production professionals are expected to produce short features for social networking sites as well as work in the traditional studio setting to create news programs for television broadcast. LSUS students work in the campus studio to produce feature programming followed by senior year internships at professional media production facilities in off-campus locations.

Journalism
The traditional field of news reporting for print publications now includes an exciting blend of web design, writing, and social networking as reporters move out of the newsroom and report from every corner of the world. Students will learn the basic skills of news writing and editing as well as media ethics and law. The weekly student newspaper, The Almagest, is published electronic, providing a wealth of practical experience for student journalists who will expected to layout electronic publications, create blogs, and upload multi-media packages before going off campus to complete senior year internships in local media outlets.

Mass Communications
Students with a broad interest in the field of mass communications may wish to prepare a flexible resume for careers in combining elements of public relations, broadcasting, and print journalism by developing a wide variety of writing, speaking, and production skills tailored to the multi-media world of news. The Generalist student is encouraged to work in both media labs learning about print and electronic news production before undertaking a more creative internship during the final semester. Media students who wish to work in government or business will choose the public relations concentration. Courses cover the history and theory of public relations including a focus on media campaigns, work in the nonprofit business sector, and persuasive techniques. As with all mass communication courses, the public relations students will become familiar with computer design, new media broadcast techniques, and writing for social networking audiences by working on the student newspaper or in the broadcast studio. In the senior year, students will intern under the direction of a community professional in the field.

Speech
Students choosing to concentrate in speech are well prepared to enter advanced training for professions such as law, therapeutic counseling, and public management where excellent speaking and listening skills are the keys to success when combined with the media skills important to reaching a variety of publics. Careers in management, politics, and editorial writing are enhanced with courses that focus on critical thinking, supporting arguments, and skills in facilitating small group discussion. The award-winning debate team is a popular student-centered activity featuring off-campus travel and competitive speaking engagements throughout the region.

Theatre
Theatre students participate may participate n both performance and production of an ambitious range of live plays on campus as part of their Mass Communications focus. Recent productions in the Black Box Theatre have received excellent media reviews, particularly those new and experimental plays with small casts. Writing reviews and working with a variety of media outlets specializing in live theatre coverage would be the internship goal of students interested in the theatre curriculum. Film Studies
Film studies courses are offered by members of several faculties at the university and can provide the Mass Communications student interested in film criticism and review a sold background in film theory, film history, and genres including international film, political film, and literary film. In the final semester, students would intern with professionals providing film festivals or other events which require media attention.
